Peter: Great question. Except we should start earlier, five is too late. So, if you think about it…you know. The early years of our life are really important. And organised school, really only started at 5 or 6-year-old, by historical coincidence. It wasn’t a great plan.

Peter: In fact, it’s been very interesting to watch over the last 10 years also, more and more emphasise in the U.S and I think around the world is what people called early learning. 2-4 years old, because clearly from brain, development stand of point, very important time, so subjective education is, obviously very important. The contemporary Chinese, word for education, didn’t even exist in China 150 years ago. It came to China from the west. So in a sense, our responsibility as parents, as teachers, as citizens, is to help young human beings, grow and develop as human beings, not to be educated. And if you look at the western education model, so much of it is influenced by its earliest formation, which was really in the early and middle part of the 19th century. When basically the societal imperative was to train factory workers. So literally, it was set up to train factory workers. And that’s why it was organized Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4. It was an assembly line. So, the student will get used to working in an assembly line. So, it is a very machine-like concept of education. So has nothing to do with human development. So, as you also say, today in this kind of unique historical turning point, it’s probably more important than ever to really think again what it means to grow and develop as a human Being. Master Nan used to often say that the greatest danger to humankind is virtual reality, you look how rapidly this process has accelerated, could this be the last generation of humans. Humans are a very young species. If you look at the species on the Earth, you might say, we are in a prototyping phase, what it means to be human beings, is not very clear. And from a biological perspective, we know that the species always exist in a Niche. And the species in Niche, they call of all and when they really become stable is the combination this species and the Niche. So for me, a lot of the deep interest in sustainability today in the world really can be interpreted, from the standpoint of if human beings are to live in the planet as a whole, as our Niche. How do we have to be to really live on the planet or in mother Earth as a post to just in a geographic or locality? You may say in a philosophic cornerstone, whether it’s Confucianism or Taoism, and even to some degree, Buddhism is the harmony of human and nature. But I think the foundation of education really needs to be how human beings grow and develop to learn how to be in harmony with nature, both our own nature; the nature of our social reality, and the nature of Mother Earth. If we don’t learn how to do that, this could be the last generation of humans.

Peter: First principle is every human being is different, so I think the first job is as a parent or teacher is the connection with the person, and what is the natural for them. But in general, I would say the first necessity is that the child, even at a very young age, needs to feel at home in nature. Climbing in the tree, rolling in the grass, talking to the rocks, kids do that naturally, they talk to everything, because their innate sense is that everything is alive. It is a great tragedy that many children today grow up in there basically afraid of nature.

Peter: It is a good question. Why settle for virtual reality when you have actual reality.

Peter: I don’t think it’s any coincidence that if you look at human history, for of almost all human history, sometime between the age of 11 or 12 or 13 years of age, you went through a rite of passage. Cultures do this in many different ways, but if they are granted, you might say intelligent culture. They understand that somewhere in that age, you are going from becoming a child, to becoming an adult. And if you look at the traditional cultures, like Native American cultures, because I know those the best. They have the vision quest for the 12 or 13-year-old. And if you look at what the purpose is. The first purpose is to connect, as an adult to the natural world, and ask the question. “Why am I here?” And much of your preparation, from a very early age, at 5 to 6 years old, is to be relaxed, to be pleasant, to feel at home in the natural world. So that when you get to the stage in life. When asking the right question, you can hear the answer. So it’s really easy to understand. Why are so many young adults lost? Because what they fundamentally need never happened. But of course, their parents are also lost. So, who’s to guide them. (7:55)

I exist; therefore, I think.

I exist; therefore, I think.

I think; therefore, I ask.

 I ask; therefore, I answer.

I answer; therefore, I doubt.

I doubt; therefore, I search.

I search; therefore, I know.

I know; therefore, I practice.

I practice; therefore, I understand.

I understand; therefore, I write.

I write; therefore, I ask.

I ask; therefore, I answer.

I answer; therefore, I doubt.

I doubt; therefore, I think.

I think; therefore, I exist.

In a twilight of life;

Searching for the mythic of truth.

If there is another way to out.

I wish I could be a comic.

Muddled Buddha

Just like when I studied Buddha at the beginning, I saw Master Zhang Jia for the first time. He told me that if you want to learn to be a Buddha, you must first understand Shakyamuni Buddha. If you don't know Sakyamuni Buddha, you will definitely go the wrong way. This is a good suggestion, no one has ever told me. He asked me to read The Sakyamuni Pu and The Sakyamuni Fang zhi; so to learn to be a Buddha, you must start with studying about Buddhism, to study about Buddhism, you must know a person who is Sakyamuni Buddha. You must understand what has happened to him. Sakyamuni Buddha is not a God, not an Angel. He is a human being. What kind of person is he? Indians call him Buddha. The translation of the Buddha into Chinese means a person who is enlightened or awakened, and it has the same meaning of “sage” in Chinese. Chinese people called “saint” to someone who has already understood the truth about the life of the universe. Chinese people called these people are saints and Indians called them the Buddhas.

Bodhisattvas understand what the ultimate truth is, but they have not actualised the truth. For a person who has actualised the ultimate truth, we called Buddha. So you have to understand what it means. However, now many Buddhists who believe in Buddhism treat Buddha as a God and also treat Bodhisattva as a God. I am afraid that it is not right. This is what Master Zhang Jia said. You have gone the wrong way. Master Zhang Jia told me this in the past, and I gradually realised it later. Why? I saw many people superstitious and didn't understand the truth; take Buddhism as a God to worship. They don't know, these Buddha statues in Buddhism are just one of the forms for us to teach Dharma. It is not for you to put Buddha statues and incense in the temples to worship. The temple is like the museum; it is for teaching. These Buddha statues are the objects for presenting Dharma in a classroom, and the classroom is an integration between the temple and the museum. There is no separation. In the present words, it is the art of Buddhist teaching. Therefore, the Buddha's statues show people thirty-two forms, eighty kinds of goodness. What is that? This is a teaching about karma: the good consequence comes from a right intention.

Buddha represents a virtue after the spiritual awakening. Bodhisattva is showing us a path of how to be a Buddha. Virtue does not come from elsewhere, but already in each of our soul; what we need to do is to restore it. Buddha taught us; the scriptures reached the broad topics, you can see, the ancient Indian religions talked about six realms of existence in Samsara: gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts and hells. Buddha said four more, including Sravaka, Pratyekabuddhayana, Bodhisattva and Buddha. In Dharma, the difference between Sages and ordinary people is how much awareness of the self. Sages know the true self, and the ordinary people know about the ego self. Learning to be a Buddha through the ego-self will become similar to Buddha, but not Buddha. What is the true self? The self can keep its origin even though the six-senses are functioning in society. Greed, jealousy, idiot, arrogance, doubt, selfishness, fame, wealth and desire are the pollutions. We live in communities with these pollutions and forget about the wisdom from the true self. If we do not make it clear, we learn to be a Buddha, yes, can be a Buddha, can be a muddle Buddha, don't you think so?

The Paradoxical Commandments and Do it Anyway

The Paradoxical Commandments

by Dr. Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

Do It Anyway

by Mother Teresa

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you.

Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.

Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten.

Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.

Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.

Actually, being in the present, if we can only put some effort, and some attention to it. It’s easier than being in the past and the future. Simply because, the present is there, right in front of you. But you know, as in everything, you need to get used to it, you need to habituate yourself. I think it is because of this, people are finding it difficult, to habituate themselves to be in the present, because they have so much habit being, being in the past and future. So it’s a new habit. It is difficult, that one. Selling the dream is easier I think.

Bloom's Taxonomy and Simple Ways of Improving Creativity

According to the Future of Jobs Report of World Economic Forum, the top 10 skills we need to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution in 2020 will be including complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, coordinating with others, emotional intelligence, judgement and decision making, service orientation, negotiation and cognitive flexibility skills. In the workplace, creativity is one of the skills that employers and human resources managers are looking for when they hire employees, and this skill will not be easily replaced by Artificial Intelligence.

Cooking is a way of practising Buddhism

Cooking is a way of practising Buddhism

Jing Guan Shi Tai (靜觀師太) has become a monk for forty-six years, and cooking has been her way of practising Buddhism. She was born in 1956. She was curious about one question when she was around six to seven years old, why do people live? Jing Guan Shi Tia's secular mother passed away when she was seventeen years old. She was upset. How could someone she loves die so suddenly, and she thought she could avoid the pain of parting if she became a monk. So one day, she ran away from home without telling anyone.

Finding one true calling or embrace different passions?

Finding one true calling or embrace different passions?

In our societies, we appreciate a person who can find his/her one true calling, pick one interest, stick to it and finally succeed in the professional field. For a person who has passion with many different things, our cultures teach us that this is wrong or abnormal. However, Emilie Wapnick has a new perspective that having interests in doing different things is beautiful and she calls this type of person is a "multipotentialite".

TED Talk: AI can help us to create jobs with compassion

Dr Kai-Fu Lee, an artificial intelligence (AI) expert, believes that AI and mankind can co-exist. Deep learning of AI Technology can use big data to learn how to predict and decide at superhuman accuracy. Dr Lee said that “I have to make myself safe, right? Really, the creative jobs are the ones that are protected, because AI can optimise but not create”. He emphasised that “work ethic in the Industrial Age has brainwashed us into thinking that work is the reason we exist, that work defined the meaning of our lives”.

Want to have a Good Teacher? Be a Good Student first.

Want to have a Good Teacher? Be a Good Student first.

Based on the law of attraction, we need to be "good" to attract good people around us. The logic of having good teachers are the same. Finding teachers is not difficult, but finding good teachers are much more like finding the treasures in the deep ocean. The reasons are the demand for good teachers is much more than the supply, and good teachers have more opportunity to choose which students they teach. Good students have the tenancy to be attracted by good teachers but how to be "good"?

Ken Robinson's Changing Education Paradigms

Ken Robinson's Changing Education Paradigms

In the 19th century, public schools had the purpose of training students' skills to work for the industries and eventually education could serve the nations' economic prosperity. However, some argued that public education system produced the social structure that it divided people into two different types, they are academic (smart people) and non-academic (non-smart people). In this system, most people suffered and the notion of “fictitious epidemic of ADHD” was addressed. Even today,  the education system seems to suppress students' aesthetic experiences….

Why STEM?

Why STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education is preparing for the kids to succeed in the 21st Century regardless of their future career paths. STEM education emphasises on learning new knowledge through the technologies and integrated subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Social Science. The purpose of teaching STEM is developing students’ higher-level thinking skills by connecting their classroom experiences to the reality instead of learning traditional subjects in the separate classrooms. Listen to what educators think about students’ skills in the 21stcentury?

The Idea of Life-wide Learning Experiences

The Idea of Life-wide Learning Experiences

Life-wide Learning (LWL) experiences are a whole-person development program for equipping students to face the fast-changing world in the 21st century.  Life-wide Learning is crucial as well as school-based learning that they are the keys to students’ success. Students can choose a wide range of activities based on their interests and strengths.  LWL experience can cover five aspects of development, including aesthetic development, career-related experiences, community service, civic and global education and physical development.

Why are design thinking skills vital to us?

Why are design thinking skills vital to us?

We all have experienced the problematic situations no matter our roles are students, parents, employees, entrepreneurs, professionals or CEOs. What do we need to have when we deal with challenges? Some said: Knowledge. For sure yes, the existing knowledge could solve our problems but could not solve the problem we have not seen before. What do we need to have when we are facing the new challenges? The answer is design thinking skills.
